Attract High-Tech Businesses for High Paying Jobs through Agile & Targeted Support

  • Windsor is going through significant economic challenges as manufacturing is moving from high cost countries, such as ours, to low cost countries such as Mexico, China, Thailand and Vietnam. The question is not whether our industries would move out to low cost countries. The real question is when would they.

  • Windsor needs to diversify economy from the traditional tool &  die and auto manufacturing to 3D Manufacturing, AI, high tech manufacturing, healthcare and education. The City must move up the value chain by adopting new technologies.

  • Windsor is considered the Car Manufacturing capital of Canada. Hence the City may decide that it should lead in self driving vehicles and in electric vehicles by doing the following things, which may require no or very low investments:

  1. Changing city By-laws so that facilities for driver-less vehicles to drive can be provided by Windsor: This is to create incentive for GM, Google, Uber and other vendors to test on Windsor Roads. (Right now Phoenix in Arizona is one of the very few cities, which allows driver-less vehicle on its roads. As a result,  Google, GM, many others are testing their vehicles in Phoenix, leading to developing high tech talent in Phoenix. AZ.)

  2. Work with the University to institute a Chair in University of Windsor to get one of the best professors/researchers in self-driving technology in the world.

  3. Declare an open award for buying 100 self driving snow plow/ pickup trucks from companies who develop and manufacture the products in Windsor.

A successful industry for production of autonomous snow plow trucks in Windsor can bring together a group of research engineers. Such a group may be able to attract others to invest in Windsor in similar other enterprises. Every such successful project can bring tens of high paying jobs to Windsor, without incurring additional high costs to the City.

  • Encourage Local businesses, especially high tech providers, by giving preference to them in City purchasing.

  • Attract  high paying jobs by encouraging IT Companies to open Windsor offices to service US Clients

Alex has exactly the kind of experience, that is required to help the Council develop and execute the policies, required to bring high-paying new jobs to Windsor.

  • Moving up the value chain: Windsor's industrial sector has built technological excellence over the last century. It is high time that Windsor rapidly imbibes and brings into use new technologies such as 3D printing, AI, robotics, biotech and genetic engineering etc. Innovations, using new technologies judiciously, will increase productivity and will improve quality so that Windsor can continue to produce goods at competitive prices.

The City Council’s role in the process is of coordination and of using & simultaneously developing the spirit of Windsor Inc.

  • In a dynamic world, some labor-intensive industries may leave Canada. But using its strengths of technology and its location, Windsor must actively work to attract new businesses, through progressive policies and through appropriate incentives, by working in coordination with WETech. As the city earns the reputation of innovation and of competence in the technologies of today and of the future, the project of attracting new enterprises to Windsor will gather momentum, bringing high-paying jobs to Windsor.

  • Make Windsor a City of Innovation:  If the City gains a reputation as a City for innovations, it will start attracting new entrepreneurs and can attract new industries with high-paying jobs. Windsor is well-placed to move forward towards becoming a city of innovation provided it has local leadership with vision, drive, management skills and passion for new technologies:

  • First Tasks: The first task is of providing necessary support to the existing businesses and in creating an environment of progress -

    • by helping existing businesses, which may be experiencing problems through agile decision-making and by providing targeted support, where necessary and

    • by creating an environment, which enables small businesses to be set up easily, by reducing licence fees and taxes.

  • Making Windsor - a Start-Up-friendly Center of the region -

    • by encouraging new ideas and by helping those working on new products, projects, businesses and industries get targeted support, as required,

    • by developing policies and bye-laws, wherever required to help Start-Ups and small businesses: Thus the City may help  purchase of new products for its own use, wherever appropriate and

    • through providing office and working space at reasonable rates near the city center.

  • Windsor's Assets: Invaluable for Innovators: Windsor can succeed in attracting innovators since it has assets, which not many places have.

    • Windsorites are known as Makers and Builders and they can help innovators prepare proto-types easily

    • Windsor has well-known Odette School of Business and Professors of Business at St Claires. The City's agencies, in coordination with the University and the College, can help the innovators study business models and then help the Start-Ups prepare documentation, as required for Financial Institutions, Crowd Funding, Angel Investors or Venture Capital Funds.

  • Windsor Inc: Windsor  can provide more jobs in automation technologies & robotics than the jobs lost due to automation, by industries in smaller towns in the region, if we work together as Windsor Inc and if Windsor, pro-actively, takes up the task of developing the products jointly with the businesses in these towns.

  • Windsor's Resources - The Right Mix: Windsor has all the resources, required to develop the automation products for the world of tomorrow, to be ushered in by the 4th Industrial Revolution:

    • manufacturers, who have been developing industrial products,

    • researchers and engineers, working in new technologies, and

    • users, who need the new products and who are located nearby.

  • But we require leadership, which has the vision, the agility and the passion to start attacking problems, which are apparent today and which are going to become bigger by the day.

  • Who, except the city of Windsor, can create the spirit of Windsor Inc among industries, researchers and governments and take the bull of automation by its horns, and, not wait for it to come and attack us?

  • A Call to Windsor Inc:   Let us develop initially new technologies required by our businesses and manufacturing units in the region and let us develop new AI-based products required by our seniors. We can do it and we should start doing it at the earliest.

    1. By using new technologies, the new products are going to become better, easier to use and less costly.

    2. Shall we wait for large corporations of the world to make these products and bring them to us or shall we marshal together our competence to build such products for ourselves, and, then supply them to the world?

    3. Virtuous Cycle: As Windsor Inc starts developing automation technologies and as these start getting used in and around Windsor, the businesses in Windsor will start growing & generating high-paying jobs  and our researchers will be able to bid for & get more grants.

    4. Windsor as a hub of innovation: Windsor is known as a city of Makers and Builders. If the City works to build a reputation as a City of Innovation, as a Start-Up-friendly city and as a city, where new technologies are used and developed in businesses, small and big, it will start attracting entrepreneurs and inventors.

    5. In addition, sSince Windsor is the transit-hub between Canada and USA, its location will be of interest to new entrepreneurs. Our university is able to attract a large number of students from China due to its high reputation. Detroit is known as the hub of Americans of Middle East. So as Windsor develops as a City of Innovation, it can develop linkages with innovation hubs in Asia and Africa. This can further strengthen it as the Mecca of inventors.

    6. Alex is an innovator, who has a patent to his credit. He can contribute  to developing Windsor as a city, which is innovator friendly, where new enterprises can be set up easily and are supported in every way and where the City Hall is agile in creating bye-laws and new policies for new technologies
